Simple or Total Mastectomy
Many women consider breast reconstruction after a simple or total mastectomy. In this type of mastectomy, a single incision across the breast enables the surgeon to remove the entire breast, including the skin, nipple, and areola, while lymph nodes located outside the breast tissue and surrounding muscle are left intact.
This type of mastectomy is usually recommended for women with multiple or large areas of ductal carcinoma in situ in the breast, and for women seeking prophylactic mastectomy.
Without breast reconstruction, a simple mastectomy may be completed in approximately two hours -- either on an outpatient basis, or requiring a one- to two-night hospital stay – your personal treatment plan will be determined by your surgeon.
